The Foundation Departement

Head of Department: Miss Sophie Davies

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children’s earliest experiences of learning lay the foundations, not only for later learning in school, but also for their self-confidence and belief in themselves as learners for their whole lives.

In the Foundation stage at SES the curriculum is planned and resourced to ignite the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and to provide opportunities for all children to succeed in a secure atmosphere and one in which they feel valued. Teachers work collaboratively together to provide opportunities, both within the indoor and outdoor learning environments, for children to learn through play as well as in more structured adult-led learning situations.

Children will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development.

  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development;
  • Personal, social and emotional development;
  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world;
  • and Expressive arts and design.

The learning environments in Foundation are well resourced and planned to ensure pupils learn through personal interest. Display is valued and celebrates the children’s work across all curriculum areas. All class rooms have interactive white boards to support the children's learning; these offer ways to support and consolidate day-to-day skills and allow access to the world outside through interactive websites.

The foundation team are all UK trained and adept at providing our young learners with the very best start in their education.

During the 2017 school year, the Foundation relocated to our fabulous new Acorn Building, which was designed with teaching staff input to maximize the light, create innovative shared spaces, and complement the classroom environment with new play areas and a new sports hall.
