Pupils at Sports Day at Sharjah English School

New Student Induction - Primary

Our aim at Sharjah English School is to ensure that every child finds success through exciting, engaging and innovative learning opportunities.

Our teachers provide a welcoming and purposeful environment that supports the very best of academic life, sporting achievement, social and moral responsibility and wellbeing.

The pupils of Sharjah English School participate in an array of activities, both in the classroom and beyond, ensuring they become confident and successful learners who grow into responsible global citizens.

Teaching and Learning

As a British School Overseas, we follow the National Curriculum of England, enhanced by UAE subjects as mandated by the Ministry of Education, UAE.

Pupils in Year 1 – Year 6 are taught the following subjects by their class teacher:

English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Integrated Curriculum (History, Geography, Art and DT), Moral Education, Social Studies and PSHE.

In addition, pupils are taught PE, Music, Arabic and Islamic Studies (Muslim Students only) by a Specialist Teacher.

Please click on the links below for more detailed information about the National Curriculum and UAE expectations for all year groups:

National Curriculum Year 1-Year 6

Moral Education – UAE

A curriculum overview, including information about Integrated Curriculum topics, will be issued in September. In addition to this, parents can expect to receive curriculum newsletters from their child’s class teacher, which contain further details about in-class learning and information about important dates and upcoming events.

Students will not be required to purchase any books. All learning resources including stationery will be provided by the school.

BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

At SES we acknowledge that technology plays a vital role in today’s society. As educators, we must harness the positive aspects of technology and view it not as a distraction, but as a way of encouraging participation in lessons and as a means of enhancing the learning opportunities that we provide.

We believe that the use of IT affords us many opportunities:

  • It enables us to cater for a wider variety of learning styles
  • It increases engagement across the curriculum
  • It provides efficient accessibility to tools and resources for both teaching and learning

Many of the education publishers used at SES are now web based platforms. At present, pupils can only access as a cohort in class; the use of a device in school would allow for individual access.

In Primary, all pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 should have their own tablet in school every day.

Devices should be fully charged for the start of the school day.

Please ensure they are in protective cases.

The device that we recommend is the 9th Generation and later iPad, with a minimum 64GB and Wi-Fi-only model.

At SES, we believe that the use of digital devices across the school has led to significant benefits for learning, including better organisation, a closer dialogue between staff and students, creative lesson outcomes, even more engaging lessons and the ability to research and access expert knowledge instantly.

Please note that for those families who wish to remain device free at home, we have a facility at school which allows you to ‘check in’ your child’s device each evening. There will be a meeting early in Term One to discuss parental control of devices and how we manage the devices on site.

Apple School

On review of our experiences with BYOD we have learnt that Apple iPads are more suitable for our work and support our initiative to be an Apple accredited school, Pupils' use of iPads will allow for a seamless connection between school Apple technology and their own.

If purchasing new, pupils will require ideally a 9th generation and later iPad (complete with cover). If your child already owns an iPad less than two years old this will work with the required apps and functions.

The optional choices include headphones, keyboard and stylus.

Our technology partners at JTRS have full details on the devices we are encouraging pupils to use in school. JTRS offer a special school discount, details can be found here.

One of the benefits of working with JTRS is that it allows the school to use a Mobile Device Management (MDM) system.

Using a MDM system:

  • Enhances our security - IT admins can restrict access to entertainment apps, gaming websites, social media platforms, and messenger services
  • Allows the IT team to manage and update the educational apps used throughout the school without requiring parents to purchase individually.
  • Enables teachers to ‘push’ teaching tools directly to the pupils’ devices without using a third party
Educational Activities

Student personal devices will be used to access resources and complete assignments.

Educational activities may include researching information, producing documents, analysing data, producing animations/movies, reading e-books, creating blogs, taking notes, or scheduling events. The use of the device is at the sole discretion of the teacher.

Digital Citizenship

A focus of this initiative is Digital Citizenship, including the appropriate use of technology, and we aim to prepare all pupils to be responsible and effective contributors to the digital world of their future. BYOD will enable us to teach all pupils about digital skills, ethics and online safety in a timely manner which is age appropriate and relevant to their immediate needs and current learning.

Safe and Secure

To maintain a safe and secure learning environment, a filtered internet connection is provided for students. Additionally, students will only be able to use their device under the direct supervision of their teacher. Any unauthorised usage (including bus services) may result in the device being confiscated, searched, and privileges being revoked.

Responsibility

Students are solely responsible for their device. They must bring it to school fully charged. As with other personally owned items, Sharjah English School is not liable for loss, damage, misuse, or theft.

Screen Time

BYOD does not change the school’s policy on student use of mobile devices. These devices are only to be used in a selection of lessons with the permission of a teacher. At all other times they should be kept secure and out of sight. As a school, our aim is to promote an active, healthy lifestyle and achieving the correct balance between ‘screen time’ and other activities is very important to us. Devices will be used to enhance learning; pupils will still be expected to maintain their current high standards of written work across the curriculum.

Technical Support

Resources will be provided to help students connect their device to the school network. Please ensure that your child is familiar with how to use their device. Teachers will incorporate the use of your child’s device into learning where appropriate. In the event that their device is not compatible with the selected app your child will continue to have access to school-owned technology on the current rotational basis.

We look forward to the educational opportunities that BYOD will provide to the pupils and we thank you for your support.

House System

Y1-6 classes organise a positive and comprehensive house point system that supports excellent behaviour and learning across all facets of school life. This is celebrated at weekly assemblies across the school. Each student will be notified about which house they are in when they join SES, siblings are placed in the same house. Please refer to the induction email received from our Head of Primary, to see which house your child is in.

The Heads of Houses are:

  • Lynxes - Miss Morgan
  • Falcons - Miss Crookes
  • Foxes - Ms Langley
  • Geckos - Mrs Piper
  • Stingrays - Miss Benger
Communication

Regular and effective communication between home and school is a key factor in ensuring that all children achieve their potential.

Should parents wish to contact a teacher, they may do so at pick up/ drop off or via email. Your child’s class teacher will provide you with their contact details at the beginning of term. We aim to respond to all parent communication within 24 hours.

If parents have any concerns, the class teacher should be the first point of contact. If required, they will liaise with their Head of Year Group and the Deputy or Head of Primary. For details on whom to communicate with please see the attached information.

Year group and whole-school updates are posted on to Tapestry (Years 1 and 2 - Y3-6?) Login details will be issued at the beginning of Term 1.

Reports are issued on Engage in terms 1 and 3.

Parent Consultation Evenings take place in Terms 1 and 2.

General Notices

We operate a ‘no hat, no play’ policy in our outdoor areas. All pupils should bring a hat and water bottle to school every day.

Long hair should be tied back and away from the child’s face.

No jewellery is to be worn at school, with the exception of small ‘stud’ earrings. We encourage pupils to wear analogue watches as a real-life link to their learning in Maths.  However, other watches may be worn as long as they are not connected to the internet.

Healthy Eating

We encourage healthy eating at school and as such, chocolate, crisps, carbonated drinks and ’fast food’ items are not allowed. If the contents of the lunchbox are unhealthy, parents will be notified.

Food items that are easy to pick up and that can be eaten cold are required. We are not able to heat food in school.

We are a nut-free school. For the safety of staff and pupils, please do not send any items containing nut (or tree nut) products.

All pupils must bring a water bottle to school. Bottles can be refilled throughout the day.

Absences

At SES we believe that when a child is regularly absent it has an adverse effect on their ability to make progress and achieve their full potential. As a result, we monitor pupil attendance closely and report it to parents on a termly basis.

Should your child be ill and unable to attend school, please let us know by sending an email to your child’s class teacher or to the Primary Reception.

Any vomiting or diarrhoea must be followed by a 24 hours absence before returning to school. An absence of two consecutive days requires a doctor’s certificate to be produced.

We do not encourage an extended leave of absence during term time; however we understand that exceptional circumstances may arise. If leave is required, please email the Head of Primary directly with your request: sbrady@sharjahenglishschool.org

Please note: Medicines can only be administered by prior arrangement with the school Nurse.

BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

At SES we have a 1:1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme regarding devices for all students at the school. SES believes that the use of digital devices across the school has led to significant benefits for learning, including better organisation, a closer dialogue between staff and students, creative lesson outcomes, even more engaging lessons and the ability to research and access expert knowledge instantly.

Sharjah English School can in no way be held responsible for the loss or damage to a personal device brought into school; students do so entirely at their own risk. Responsible use, by the student, is paramount and is expected at all times, including but not limited to: keeping it up to date via regular anti-virus and operating system updates and as secure as possible. It is the student’s duty to be responsible for the upkeep and protection of their devices. Please do read the below advise regarding the device that your child should have at school. It is an expectation that all students bring their devices fully charged to school every day. Each student will have access to a locker where they can lock their device away when they are not using it.

For Year 7-9 Students:

  • The device that we recommend is the 9th Generation and later iPad, with a minimum of 64GB and Wi-Fi-only model. You may compare this model against others here: www.apple.com/ae/ipad/compare

For Year 10-13 Students:

  • Students should still be able to make effective use of their iPad during these more senior years at the school but should start to investigate the purchase of their own laptop computer as this will allow more functionality and use in some specific subjects (such as Computer Science & Design and Technology). For Year 10-13 students we advocate a Bring Your Own Device model, however would recommend a Macbook Air with a minimum of 8GB ram and 256 GB storage as a particularly effective device for your son or daughter to have during their final two years of school in Year 12 and 13.
PastoRal Care & Well-Being - House System

During every student’s time here in the Secondary School at SES, the central support and care system for them will be their House. There are five Houses at SES. Each House is run by a Head of House together with a team of tutors. The Head of House and the tutor will be your main point of contact throughout your child/ren’s time here and the relationship with them is key for them and yourselves. Please see below the contacts for the key pastoral leaders in the school.
